Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme
Offered by Tony Elumelu Foundation
The Tony Elumelu Foundation programme is the continent's largest private entrepreneurship scheme by number of beneficiaries: around 3,200 entrepreneurs selected each year, across all 54 African countries.
Each winner receives $5,000 in non-repayable seed capital, follows a twelve-week training programme and is assigned a mentor. The amount is modest next to other programmes, but it comes with no equity taken and no collateral required, which makes it reachable for projects no bank would finance.
Applications usually run from January to March. Given the sheer volume of submissions, clarity wins: a project explained simply, with a costed funding need and a named market, fares better than an ambitious but confusing one.
